Research Facilities
Central Laboratory Facilities
Our Department has invested millions of dollars and great deal of manpower and resources to establish the Central Laboratory (http://www.phy.cuhk.edu.hk/centrallaboratory/). This Laboratory not only provides top-grade experimental equipment for academic staff and graduate students to use, it also presents itself as a teaching laboratory for undergraduate students.
Thin Film Deposition Facilities
High vacuum coating system; low pressure chemical vapour deposition systems; sputtering thin film coating system; spin coater; pulsed-laser deposition system.
Materials Characterization
High resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) with an electron energy loss spectrometer; scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometers, one with field emission gun, one equipped with a cathodoluminescence system, and one suitable for variable pressure imaging; X-ray diffractometers (XRD), rotating anode X-ray source, EDAX X-ray microanalysis system, micro X-ray fluorescence; physical property measuring system (PPMS) that provides an ultracold (0.35K) and highly magnetized (14T) environment, capable of measuring resistivity, Hall effect, magnetic moment, AC susceptibility, etc.; atomic force microscope (AFM) / scanning tunneling microscope (STM); surface profiler; differential scanning calorimeter; thermomechanical analysis system; thermogravimetric analysis system; dynamic mechanical analysis system; microhardness tester.
Equipment for Optical Measurement
Stereo, inverted and ordinary optical microscopes; photoluminescence microscope; Raman and microRaman spectrometers; FTIR spectrometer; UV-VIS-IR double beam spectrometer; fluorescence lifetime imaging microscope system equipped with a confocal microscope, an ultrafast femtosecond pulsed laser, and single-photon detectors, which allow the spatial and temporal imaging of optical materials down to diffraction limit and nanoseconds.
Computational Facilities
The Department provides a powerful computational environment for various research fields through its three well-equipped computational physics laboratories. As of 2010, there are over 80 high speed UNIX workstations, UNIX & Novell servers and many research/multimedia PCs, including 63 high-speed Linux workstations, 2 SUN Enterprise servers and a 20-nodes Linux cluster for heavy-duty parallel calculations. Other computer accessories include notebook computers, networked B/W and colour laserjet printers, scanners, digital camera and camcorders. All hardwares are networked and provide a full range of application softwares for scientific computing and graphics.
Others
10 K closed cycle refrigerating system, thermoluminescence dating system, 20 GHz digitizing oscilloscope, Tektronix logic system, pulse-echo ultrasonic detection system, laser doppler velocimeter.
